Bonjour, fashionistas!

When we think of Parisian style, words like effortless, chic, timeless, understated come to mind. Are you looking to elevate your wardrobe with a touch of Parisian charm and sophistication? Let's have a look at these 5 fashion staples that every Parisienne has in her wardrobe, and the reasons why you should, too.

  1. Invest in a pair of quality pointy flat or block heeled shoes in neutral colours (opt for black or beige as these colours are the easiest to mix and match). Think of the iconic beige Chanel pumps and slingbacks with the black tip (they have been heavily copied by high street brands such as Aldo, Level Shoes or even Vivaia with their 'Julie' model, so there is no need to break the bank and they are just as pretty!). A classic, neutral yet classy and timeless shoe will ensure that your outfit is harmonious and polished while also keeping you comfortable, and this is why I insist on flat or block heeled: Nothing will do more damage to your Parisian charm than a bad posture or a look of pain on your face because you cannot walk comfortably!

  2. What would the Parisienne do without her iconic trench coat? Perfect for 'in-between' seasons and cloudy days, the trench coat will add a touch of retro chic to your outfit while keeping you sheltered from the wind and other weather elements. The beauty of trench coats is that thanks to their belt they can even be worn oversized, providing you with a cozy and sheltered feeling. So you found the perfect trench coat on that vintage market in the 4th arrondissment but unfortunately it is a tad too big? Go for it girl, there isn't anything a nice belt fitted at the waist can't fix!

  3. Oh, the traditional Marinière, our white, navy striped long-sleeved top... Our mothers wear it, our grandmothers wear it, even our men wear it! This classic fashion staple from Brittany is almost a question of national pride. Originally worn by sailors in the 19th century, later popularised by Coco Chanel in the 1910s, the Marinière is an essential part of a timeless, French- inspired wardrobe. Pair it with high-waisted jeans, navy trousers or even with a mini A-line or midi skirt. And if the weather is a little chilly, throw your newly purchased trench coat on top of all that for the perfect finishing touch!

  4. No list of French wardrobe staples would be complete without the Little Black Dress (LBD), which has become a symbol of timeless elegance and versatility. As your ultimate black canvas that you can effortlessly transition from day to night with nothing but a few simple accessory swaps (dark vs light blazer, heels vs flats, red lip vs nude lip), the LBD is an absolute must in your wardrobe. I will post in the next few days on how to select the perfect LBD for your body shape, because when it comes to Parisian fashion, fit is everything and how you feel in your clothes is ultimately the most important thing.

  5. When it comes to French fashion, less is more but sometimes your outfit just feels like it's missing that little je ne sais quoi... When this happens, scarves are your answer! I recommend investing in a couple of quality silk pieces in different sizes, patterns and colours to pair with a greater number of outfits. Whether tied around your neck, on your head, folded into a headband (think 60s Brigitte Bardot style), around the handle of your handbag or just effortlessly thrown over your shoulders, the possibilities are endless! Stay tuned for a 'how to' tutorial to come on this topic, with plenty of photos for inspiration, as well as advice on how to select scarves and accessories matching your colour season (and what to do with those accessories that don't!).

By incorporating these timeless Parisian fashion staples into your wardrobe, you'll be well on your way to achieving that coveted French girl style. Remember, it's all about quality, simplicity, and attention to detail. Bonne chance!
